Mobile gaming has never been in such good shape. As such, even the likes of huge players such as Sony is looking to impact the space with numerous PlayStation classics in what would be a truly significant development for the genre overall. In fact, it would be massive.
Sony’s PlayStation expansion into mobile gaming will reportedly focus on popular franchises, but speculation is rife at the moment. Should it materialize, though, then smartphone gaming will have added yet another string to its bow in what is an emerging category in gaming. Alongside sophisticated titles like Fortnite and PUBG, which have made a successful transition over to mobile, smartphone gamers can also sample brain teasers, play the best live dealer Baccarat online, catch Pokemon while on the bus, or even rumble the lurking killer in Among Us. The options are certainly comprehensive, but that doesn’t mean smartphone gaming necessarily appeals to everyone, regardless of whether or not Sony enters the space and PlayStation classics continually come out on mobile.
With smartphone gaming failing to appeal to everyone, we thought we’d go through some of the key reasons why that could change one day. Sony clearly thinks it could, too.
Gaming on the go
A huge factor behind smartphone gaming’s success has to be down to its portability and the fact gamers can session games throughout the day. It’s certainly not uncommon to see someone playing a mobile game while on a morning commute to work or while waiting at a doctor’s surgery, especially as most of the games released on mobile are designed to be picked up and put down with ease. On top of this, the vast majority of the world’s population has access to a smartphone in 2021, but not everyone can afford an expensive console device.
Also, the time and dedication required to master a console game aren’t necessarily achievable for the average person, therefore making a less daunting and more friendly smartphone game very appealing to some. As a result, mobile game developers have been able to tap into casual gamers or people who don’t game at all. There are brain training creations for elderly gamers, a variety of releases for kids, and then thousands of releases for everyone in between. Should PlayStation and Sony team up to throw even more titles into the ring, then it could result in new audiences discovering the delights of smartphone gaming too.
Console-quality titles
It’s no secret, but innovation is resulting in better smartphone devices than ever before. Many of the phones we can purchase today not only take high-quality images and can house sophisticated apps, but they also have the power to host a number of console-quality games. As such, it is now common to see well-known titles make the transition over to mobile. The likes of Fortnite, PUBG, Minecraft, and Mario Kart are just a few that have done exactly that, although with Sony looking to break into mobile gaming with PlayStation, then we could see it reach new heights. Gamers can also purchase an array of add-ons to improve the all-around gaming experience on mobile, with accessories like joysticks and virtual reality headsets being widely used at the moment.
Cheap or free games
Console gaming isn’t cheap. In fact, it’s extortionate really. As a result, mobile gaming, with its more affordable offering, is appealing to millions of gamers. Most releases are either free or incredibly cheap, and there is a comprehensive selection of games to choose from, which can be downloaded in seconds. Should Sony get involved, it will need to serve up cheaper games.
